Peaceful Restaurant

Last weekend, J wanted to take me to Shalin Noodle House for their famous hand-made noodle soup. I got excited because I've heard good reviews about this place and I love noodle soup especially on a cold winter day. When we got there, we saw a huge line up and didn't want to wait. J suggested we try Peaceful Restaurant instead. It's also a hand-made noodle place just a few stores down.

The place was just as busy but the wait wasn't as long. We ordered the beef noodle soup and chicken noodle soup. We had the option of choosing between the broad and thin hand-made noodles. We chose broad for our beef noodle and thin for our chicken noodle soup so we can try both :)

I loved the beef noodle soup. The noodles were chewy, soup was very tasty (with a hint of sweetness) and beef very tender. It's definitely one of the better ones I've had in Vancouver.

The chicken noodle soup on the other hand was a bit bland. It's not something I would order again.

Overall, I was satisfied with the service and food and will definitely go back. I want to try the other dimsum and noodle dishes they have.  Diners, DriveIns and Dives's Guy Fieri is also featuring this restaurant in his show so expect longer lines in the future! :)

SING Hainanese Chicken House

When my dad visited us in Vancouver he was raving about this hainanese chicken place. He said it tasted a lot better than the ones we had in Vancouver.  Now that we are visiting the Philippines, he brought us to Sing Hainanese Chicken House (located on the 6th floor of Edsa Shangri-la) to try it for ourselves.

Dad ordered a whole order of their roasted and white hainanese chicken.  Each came with 4 bowls of rice, soup and three kinds of dipping sauce (hoisin, chili and ginger).   Dad's right - they were both really delicious! They were just as good as the ones I had in Singapore.  The chickens were already de-boned and very tender.  Everyone liked the soup because it was very tasty but I found it too salty.

We also ordered their specialty drink, coco pandan, which dad gulped down so fast :) He really enjoyed it but I thought it was more suited as a dessert than a drink.

I had the fresh mango shake which is my absolute fave drink here in the Philippines :)

Iceberg

I grew up eating at Iceberg with my mom. She loves halo-halo so this is where we usually go for our afternoon snack :) They have a lot more food and dessert to choose from in their menu since I was last there.

I loooove the mango con hielo. It's loaded with Philippine mangoes, ice and milk :) It's definitely not something I get to have back in Vancouver :)

Halo-halo is their specialty and I like their version cuz they don't have beans in them unlike most places.

Bagoong Club

It's been almost two years since my last visit to the Philippines. I miss authentic filipino food so I suggested we have that for lunch. We went to Bagoong Club on Tomas Morato. The place is close to ABS CBN studio so a lot of filipino celebrities go to this resto as we can see from the pictures on their walls.

Their service was pretty good which is how it usually is in most restaurants in the Philippines. They are always overstaffed so there's always someone just standing there ready to help. We ordered a LOT of food.  I didn't get to take pictures of everything though because we were all so hungry and ready to eat! :)

Free appy: Radish with 2 types of bagoong

Okoy

Crispy Pork

Pork Sisig

Kare-Kare

Laing (my fave dish)

Green Mango Shake

Buko Pandan

This has become one of my favourite Filipino restaurant. The service and food is pretty good. Its definitely worth trying :)

Athene's Greek Restaurant

J & I was in the mood for some Greek food. My sister recommended this place on West Broadway called Athene's which she found in the entertainment book so we decided to give it a try.

The place was pretty quiet since it was a weeknight. The server was very pleasant and attentive.

They gave us two buns as we sat down. I didn't like them very much because they werent as soft and warm as I would have wanted. I guess it's also cuz I was expecting pita bread instead of buns since we were in a Greek restaurant.  But I finished them anyway :) hehe :)

J ordered the daily special (roasted lamb) while I had the roasted chicken.  Both dishes came in big portions and were very tender. The prices were reasonable and our buy 1 get 1 free coupon made it even better :)

A good meal is not complete without dessert (hence, my chubby cheeks) so we opted for one of their popular desserts, Ek-mek. The Ek-mek is soooo yummy and delicious. It has a spongy wafer soaked in liquor and topped with custard, whipped cream and cinnammon. I was very satisfied with my meal and will definitely go back with J :)

Santouka Ramen

I’ve heard a lot of good things about this ramen place and wanted to try it myself.  Luckily, I went there late in the afternoon so it wasn’t busy at all.

The interior is not very big.  You can see through the kitchen and watch the friendly staff prepare the food.

I found the ramen really good!!! I love the chewiness of the ramen noodles and the broth was very tasty! I had the regular Miso Ramen and J had the  Spicy Miso Ramen.  The Miso Ramen had a soybean paste flavor.  It’s made with a mixture of pork broth and rich miso paste.  I’m not normally fond of pork but the Cha Shu (slice pork) that came with this ramen was sooooo soft it melts in your mouth! Delish!  The ramen came in two sizes but we both opted for the small size since we had another dinner to go to. It’s a bit more pricey than some other ramen places but I think it was well worth it!

Beavertails

Beavertail is a Canadian-based chain originated in Ottawa. They have several booths all over Canada that sells fried dough pastries which are hand stretched to resemble a beaver’s tail and are topped with various condiments.

There’s a small stand in Lonsdale Quay franchised by an asian couple which I stopped by last weekend.  I tried the cinnamon and sugar flavor which is also the most popular one. It was really delicious but I found that there was too much cinnamon and sugar and was getting all over my shirt.  Nevertheless, the mess was well worth it! Mmmm…. I’m definitely going back to try the other flavors :)
